Slurry pumps

Generally speaking, in the definition of slurry, we can define any liquid that is mixed with some solid particles. In this definition, what exactly specifies the type and characteristics of slurry, the type’s combination, size, amount and shape of solid particles in this type of liquid, along with the type of liquid that is to be transported.

Typical Slurry Pump are commonly used to pump these types of liquids. Slurry Pump have a simple designs and are simpler and more practical than other types of other equipment. But the key to designing these pumps is the high confidence in the mechanical design of these pumps to make them more reliable.

Today, a wide range of pumps are used for slurry pumping. Although the most common type of pump for slurry pumps is centrifugal pumps, however, positive displacement pumps or other types of pumps, such as Venturi eductors pumps, are also used for this purpose. The slurry pump is a centrifugal, heavily reinforced pump that can perform the same heavy duty that other pumps are less capable of pumping because this kinds of pumps are heavy and robust version of a centrifugal pump. Generally, a centrifugal slurry pump is designed to use centrifugal force, which, like other types of clear liquid centrifugal pumps, uses a rotary impeller to transfer energy to the slurry transfer and pumping pump.

What is a components of slurry pump?

  • IMPELLERS
  • CASINGS

Determining the components of the slurry pumps depends entirely on the type of slurry. To find out and choose the best slurry pump, we first need to look at the concentration of solids in the slurry. Often, the most important factor in the classification of slurry is the concentration of their solids. Accordingly, in the slurry Commercial classification of 5% solids, known mainly as mine de-watering pumps, the general slurry are in the category of slurry with 20% of the solids in terms of weight and is known as a general pump.

The slurry which contains 40% solids by weight need the heavy duty pumps. If more than 40% and up to 70% has solids in terms of weight, they should be pumps for mine tailing, sand and minerals concentrates.

In addition, for the classification of slurry pumps, one of the main factors in considering the peripheral speed of the impeller. Accordingly, the peripheral speed must be in accordance with the type of slurry and classification of abrasion, so that it not only pump well the slurry, but also have a suitable life span with the least amount of abrasion depending on the type of solids.

One of the best ways to classify slurry pumps is to use the classifier of solids used in pump applications. slurry pumps usually pump mud, clay, sand, silt, and other types of slurry with solid mixtures with dimensions of 2 mm. in this classification the size ranges mostly are: Mud/clay pumps suitable for pumping mixtures with solids of less than 2 microns, slurry pumps for solid mixtures are between 2 and 50 microns, special pumps for odorless slurry with solids between 50 and 100 microns, medium slurry pumps for slurry Mixed with solids between 100 and 500 microns, coarse pumps designed for pumping mixed slurry with solids of 500 to 2000 microns in size.

Sand and gravel pumps are usually used for pumping shingle and gravel sizes between 2 and 8 mm, gravel pumps are also used for pumping mixed slurry with up to 50 mm solids, and Dredge pumps used to pumping slurry Mixtures with solids above 50 mm.

All sorts of Slurry pumps that are usually named by their type can be described as follows:

  • Slurry Pumps
  • Gravel pumps
  • Dredge pumps
  • Sump pumps
  • Froth pumps
  • Carbon Transfer pumps
  • Submersible pumps

In design, slurry pumps are also designed in four ways:

  • Pumps that are installed dry and with a horizontal and vertical tank
  • Pumps for semi-dry installation with a vertical reservoir
  • Pumps for dry installation that are made with a tank
  • And floating or Submersible pumps designed for installation in wet areas.

In terms of wear resistance, slurry pumps are designed and constructed as follows:

  • Very high resistance pumps for very abrasive conditions
  • Abrasive Resistant Pumps
  • Pumps with low resistance to abrasive conditions

CONCEPTS OF MATERIAL SELECTION

Typically, the slurry pumps are made according to the amount of solids and their resistance to abrasion, and which types of materials cannot be pumped with which type of pump can be pumped according to the exact method. Typically, various factors are used to determine the type of slurry pump used, and many features of slurry are considered.

Thus, limiting factors cannot be considered for the selection of sludge pump in different applications.

However, the following restrictions should be considered:

  1. a) type of pump
  2. b) pump speed
  3. c) Options available in the range of available models

Selection of wear material

  • Metal

In general, the metal is better than the rubber, due to its higher tolerance to wear, especially for pumping larger materials than rubber.

Typically, the following metals are used to make a sludge pump:

– Iron with high chromium content

Iron with a high chromium content iron with a nominal hardness of 650 BHN.
In PH values, it is possible to select down to 3.5, which is the standard material for most types of pumps.

– Manganese steel

For dredging programs, the best choice is manganese steel with a hardness of up to 350 BHN.

  • Elastomers

Although a variety of synthetic rubbers are also used to make a slurry pumps, the overall use of natural rubber is better and more. If the rubber resistance is significant, a lot of cost should be considered for rubber selection. However, due to the density and dimensions of the solids contained in the slurry, rubber is mainly used for making slurry pumps with solid mixtures, ultimately between 5 and 8 mm, because thicker and sharp solids can easily be damaged to rubber and Pump off.

Types of rubbers used to build a slurry pump include:

– All types of elastomer family rubbers

– Natural rubber

– Types of synthetic and polyurethane rubbers
